Aug. 19, 2010 – Thursday evening a standing room only audience witnessed Scott Rigell easily win the first debate between the candidates for Congress in Virginia’s Second District.
The majority of questions centered around jobs and the economy. Other issues included the proposed closure of JFCOM; Military issues; taxes; the failure of the stimulus; and health care .
The incumbent, Congressman Nye, found himself playing defense all night. In a sluggish economy, Nye found it hard to defend his most recent vote in favor of increasing taxes on our struggling businesses.
Scott Rigell was quick to point out the incumbents failure to take a position on any of the bills in Congress ahead of the vote. Nye’s office has been known to state the Congressman is ‘undecided’ right up to the last-minute of the vote. Scott Rigell stated, “Clarity comes to Congressman Nye when clarity comes to Speaker Pelosi on the vote count,”. The implication being that, in an election year, and knowing Nye will find it very hard to protect his seat; he is sometimes allowed to vote more conservatively. This pattern has led some to say that Nye is not a ‘blue dog’ he is Nancy’s ‘lap dog’.
Rigell pointed out that by virtue of Nye’s spending so much time being ‘undecided’ it is impossible for him to actually ‘lead’. We need a Representative in Congress that will stand up and fight for us in Congress. This is something our current Representative has never done.
Scott Rigell, a leading businessman in the Hampton Roads area, was inducted into the Hampton Roads Business Hall of Fame earlier this year. A leader in his community, Scott and his wife, Teri, have homeschooled all four of their children. Scott, his father, and his son have all served in the Marines.
